Album + Art: When Classical Meets Pop

Philippine graphic artist Eisen Bernardo Bernard has created Mag+Art, a collection of magazine covers and classical painting mashups, is featured in more than 500 online articles in more than 30 countries.

A development communicator by profession, he works as a multimedia producer and writer at the Communication and Public Affairs unit of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity. He has laid out publications and produced audiovisual materials for the local and international research organizations based in the Philippines. He is the illustrator of Asia Rice Foundation’s children’s book, The Adventure of Gabby Ghas, which is translated to other regional dialects. As a blogger, his graphic design blogs showcase his works with reference to music, movies, and pop culture.

Two of his related art projects such Album+Art and Criterion+Art has also made waves online. He experimented on his Tumblr blog initially with mash-ups of old paintings with pictures from magazines. Then one of his followers suggested he try using the same with artwork with music and movies.

“I believe that good cover design is inspired directly from the world of classical art,” says Bernard, “there are many similarities and references to painting.” The sight of an album raises in his mind an impromptu match with an old master, but it doesn’t always happen. Some collages incur within one hour. For other mash-ups he’s researched up to a week for the right image to cover.

Some of his art album mashups include: Michael Jackson meets Van Gogh: The cover of the posthumous compilation “Xscape” on Van Gogh’s “Zouave Milliet Seated” from 1888; “Pin Ups” by David Bowie and “scene in Spain near Seville” by John Bagnold Burgess.; Britney Spears on the cover of “Circus” in the painting “La Soiree” by Vittorio Reggianini; “Like a Virgin” by Madonna combined with “Young Woman Reading” by Alfred Stevens and more.
