This year, the SFJAZZ Collective ventured into pop music territory and emerged with arrangements from one of the genre’s most iconic figures — Michael Jackson.
The eight-piece ensemble, which includes members from all over the world who are among the best in jazz, is based at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco and pays tribute to the past while focusing on the modern era of the genre.
The collective’s performance of original compositions and arrangements of Michael Jackson’s work this week is presented by Purdue Convocations.
Here are excerpts from the Journal & Courier’s interview with Simon.
Question: While working on this project, what did you discover musically about Michael Jackson and the song you arranged (“Heartbreak Hotel”) that you never realized before?
Answer: I always knew that his music had a lot of strong grooves and baselines. And those are two aspects of music in general that really attract me….
