Pharrell’s ‘Happy’, Katy Perry and Ludivico Einaudi’s ‘Primavera’ top the annual PPL People’s ‘most played’ Pop, Artist and Classical Charts in 2014 respectively.

PPL, the music licensing company that works on behalf of record companies and performers to license recorded music played in public (at pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, shops, offices and many other business types) and broadcast (TV and radio) has today published its annual ‘People’s Charts’ of the most played Pop, Artist and Classical charts of 2014.

PPL’s ‘People’s Charts’ are compiled from music usage data from PPL’s licensees across the UK: including radio stations and television channels as well as businesses such as pubs, clubs, bars, gyms and shops, amongst many other business types. The charts are annually released in June at the company’s AGM, which this year takes place on 3 June at King’s Place, London.

Russell Chant, Music reporting Manager, PPL said: “These charts are compiled from music usage and airplay data from radio stations and TV channels, but what makes them unique is that they also include usage in pubs, clubs, bars, gyms – even jukeboxes. They really are the people’s charts and show not just what is really popular with the public but also what is popular in public places.”

Also revealed at PPL’s AGM were the company’s 2014 financial results; overall collections and distributable income (following the deduction of running costs from collections) reached an all-time high; £187.1 million and £161.2 million respectively. PPL distributes all revenues, less costs, to its performer and record company members, ensuring that all those that invest their time and talent in making recorded music are paid fairly for their work.
