Sources: Seventeen – By Noelle DeVoe | All Things Michael

Obviously, every dance should feature the hottest songs of the moment (*cough*”Uptown Funk”*cough*), but any DJ spinning on the big night is obligated to play certain iconic tracks for prom to even ~really~ be prom. So if you’re on the committee, or planning an after-party, you may want to mix up a playlist with these must-play tracks, just in case.

1. “I Gotta Feeling,” by The Black Eyed Peas

This song is really the only option to start off the night. It’s lyrics are guaranteed to pump everyone up and help them forget what a pain it was getting ready so that they can have an amazing time dancing the night away!

2. “The Cha Cha Slide,” by DJ Casper

Everyone will laugh and shake their heads at the fact the DJ dared to play such a corny line dance, but once a few brave souls jump on the dance floor and start jumping and sliding and cha-cha-ing in (almost) perfect unison, all the naysayers always slowly join in on the fun (as a joke, obvs). But let’s be real, everybody was supes nervous about getting on the dance floor and this track is the perf way to get the party started!

3. “Call Me Maybe,” by Carly Rae Jepsen

Come on, admit it. As soon as you hear that epic intro with all the violins, you know you’re about to go HARD jumping and dancing to this jam (as you shout every word at the top of your lungs).

4. “Teach Me How To Dougie,” by Cali Swag District

Whether you’re an amazing dancer or you have a million left feet, the Dougie is a dance that EVERYONE can enjoy, which is why it’s a prom staple (yup, even the chaperones may join in on this one, which is worth playing it all on its own).We mean, it’s just so much fun!

5. “Get Low,” by Lil Jon & Da Eastside Boyz

To the windOOOOooooOOOOoooow! To the waaaaall! Is there anything left to say about this dance floor staple?!

6. “Don’t Want To Miss A Thing,” by Aerosmith

If you had to choose one slow dance to rule all other slow dances, this classic Aerosmith song would definitely come out on top. Whether you dance to it with your bae, crush, or BFF, this song brings back all those quintessential high school memories and will have you tearing up by the end.

7. “Hot In Here,” by Nelly

The song resonates particularly well around 11 o’clock, when the boys have removed their jackets because they’ve sweat through their dress shirts completely from the dance floor being so packed.Ewww.

8. “What Makes You Beautiful,” by One Direction

Say what you want about One Direction, but their debut track is INFECTIOUS! And when that chorus drops and those boys start singing about you lighting up the world with your overwhelmingly gorgeous hair flips, you’ll never have felt more beautiful jamming out in your prom dress.

9. “Party in the USA,” by Miley Cyrus

Ummm, this song is a must-have, obviously, if only to show your ~American pride~ (and Miley love!).

10. “Single Ladies,” by Beyonce

The guys will scowl and act like they don’t appreciate the girl power song selection for the first 30 seconds, but as soon as that hook starts blasting out over the speakers, they’ll be like:

11. “Jump On It,” by Sugar Hill Gang

The second you hear that Bum… Bum, Bum, Bum… Bum, Bum… ting tingaling a tingaling tingaling, ting tingaling a tingaling tingaling (yes, that’s what the intro sounds like phonetically and we stand by it), you know it’s about to GO DOWN.

12. “Thriller,” by Michael Jackson

No prom is complete without a Michael Jackson iconic track. The legend has so many amazing dance tracks that they really all could be played at prom and no one would complain, but “Thriller” is just the jam. Every single person will be throwing their claws in the air for sure jamming to this ’80s classic that never, ever gets old.

13. “Don’t Stop Believin’,” by Journey

For seniors on their way out of high school getting ready to take on the real world for the first time, prom is one of the last events before graduation, which can be seriously scary. This track always brings everyone together at the end of the night and leaves them feeling hopeful about their future — like they can do anything!
