MICHAEL Jackson’s legacy burns bright in the moonwalking feet of young dancers at the Thriller Live flash mob dance competition.
Paying homage to the late King of Pop, 87 contestants danced in the blistering heat at the outdoor fountain area of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur recently.
Entertaining a growing crowd around them with Jackson’s greatest hits, including Billie Jean and Beat It, the contestants organised themselves into seven groups to vie for cash prizes worth RM10,000.
Judged by celebrity choreographer of 8TV Showdown fame Maple Loo, Spanish celebrity fitness instructor Vidal Gomez and Thai dance instructor Lili Kosin, the performances were judged on their technique and creativity.
“Overall, these young dancers have truly blown us away with their effort and talent.
“They are definitely raising the bar in Malaysia,” said Loo.
Grand prize winner Swagxy, comprising eight members, swept the crowd away with their spectacular coordination and dynamic dance movement using caps, mimicking Jackson’s classic moves, while the first runner-up spot went to group Acts-Treme 10 with the youngest dancer at the age of six and the second runner-up title was awarded to team Souleganz with the oldest dancer at the age of 47.
Swagxy group leader Coery Sik, 30, said the team had only one-and-a-half months of training prior to the competition.
“We completed our full rehearsals yesterday.
“None of the group members had known each other prior to the group’s formation, yet they were truly dedicated to performing together,” said the dance instructor of 10 years.
Impressed by the overwhelming positive response, Milestone Production managing director Grace Lee said the successful flash mob competition was a joyous way of celebrating the legend.
“I am very happy to see the young ones dance along to Michael Jackson’s classic hits.
“It proves that his music is still very much alive in their hearts,” she said, adding that the competition was held in conjunction with the upcoming musical Thriller Live: A Musical Celebration direct from London’s West End.
Thriller Live: A Musical Celebration moonwalks to Malaysia from March 19 to 22 at Putra World Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil. Tickets are now available on http://www.ticketcharge.com.my
