News of disco queen Donna Summer’s death was being announced on the radio as I pulled into Canal Fulton’s Northwest High School’s parking lot to attend its May Fiesta dress rehearsal.
Imagine my surprise when I walked into the auditorium and found out the whole production was bathed in a ’70s and ’80s disco fever theme. There was a spinning disco ball, and costumes and tunes from Lipps Inc.’s Won’t You Take Me to Funkytown, the Village People’s YMCA and Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive.
Dance steps flowed from the Temptation walk to the bump to the hustle.
Things were poised to get even more interesting as I focused on one young man who had really stepped outside of his comfort zone to do all that he did.
Nate Johnston is his name.
His is a feel-good story on a number of levels. For starters, it spoke volumes about what a person— viewed by conventional thinking as “different” — can accomplish when he’s supported by a dedicated family and remarkably accepting teachers, especially special education director Michael Capes and musical director JoAnn Pitzer, schoolmates and friends.
Nate, 18, is a junior who has been diagnosed with autism.
Autism is a complex developmental disability, defined by the Autism Society of America as “impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions and leisure or play activities.’’
Even so, there was Nate — front and center and in all of his glory — singing and moving and a-grooving to the lively disco beat.
OK, he wasn’t always in lockstep with everyone else.
But that’s not the takeaway here.
The point is that he was up there, participating, smiling and obviously having a great time. And he was being embraced and accepted at every turn.
Even more amazing was Nate’s big dance number.
A solo performance at that.
Talk about the courage that it must have taken to be out on the stage by himself, right in the public eye as the curtain opened.
For his soft-shoe debut, he reached high, tapping into Michael Jackson’s Beat It from the King of Pop’s platinum Thriller album.
Instructor on hand.
On one side of the stage, hidden behind the curtain and out of view of the audience, was Tori Fox — one of his private dance instructors — who was acting out the steps for Nate to watch as he went along. Call it an insurance policy the gloved one had on the side to make sure panic didn’t set in.
Tori — who is a freshman at the University of Akron, where she’s majoring in dance and special education — operates Dance House studio in Medina with her sister Lindsay. Nate is a student there.
Nate’s very proud mother Susan — who had been there to encourage her son every step of the way — captured all of his moves on camera. (His father is Scott Johnston.)
“He likes the arts and he has been able to use drama, acting and music to help him recover language and skills,” Susan Johnston said.
“He has been in three school plays and he has been in the choir program since he was a freshman. And it’s really enhanced his high school experience.”
She credits the dancing as playing a pivotal role in her son’s development.
“One of his classmates who graduated last year and her sister who helps with the choreography wanted Nate to take dance lessons so he could be upfront on stage and build his confidence.”
“He has been taking dance lessons with Tori … at Dance House in Medina weekly since August. They are so patient with him.”
This is not to say that each person with autism will be able to do what Nate does. Just that they have the opportunity, with the right kind of support, to write their own script, refusing to be defined by what academics or clinicians say is possible.
In other words, living their lives with question marks instead of periods.
Nate’s dancing, his mother was quick to acknowledge, “is average but he sure looks GREAT in his Michael Jackson costume.”
“When you consider that most people affected by autism are not able to imitate or cross midline well and Nate is accomplishing this because he is trying so hard to dance,” she said. “It is great to watch him at his lessons doing all these things he is not supposed to be able to do.”
Northwest High’s assistant principal, Scott Burnett, in talking about Nate — who takes a combination of regular and special education classes (depending on the courses) — applauded his perseverance. “He has been very successful here, where lots of students with similar disabilities are placed in more specialized programs.”
Dave Cooper, Nate’s case manager since his freshman year, agreed, crediting Nate’s parents for his drive.
“He’s involved in lots of activities, including helping out as assistant manager for the boys basketball team,” Cooper said.
“So the social piece is there.”
Why Michael Jackson?
Nate Johnston — if you haven’t guessed it already — is a huge Michael Jackson fan. And not just because he loves the genius of Michael’s music.
He believes the two share a bond, Susan Johnston explained:
“He relates to Michael Jackson because he feels both missed their childhoods. Michael because his music career took off so fast and Nate because of autism.
“I asked Nate how he [Michael] changed the music industry. Nate said because he invented the moonwalk. Nate doesn’t quite have the moonwalk down.” But that didn’t stop him from doing his own version on stage for all the world to see.
So what if Nate’s mastery of the moonwalk wasn’t perfect?
Maybe it should never be.
After all, Michael Jackson’s moonwalk is a highly stylized dance technique that presents the illusion of the dancer being pulled backward as he attempts to walk forward.
That’s not Nate Johnston.
He has made too many giant steps forward to ever glide backward.

Administrator’s Note: I wish Nate all the best in life. He clearly has the drive to be whatever he wants and he has a lot of support to do it. Other than family, I am sure that Michael would be one of his biggest supporters if he were here. Much love to Nate! Follow your dream! ♥

We shrugged when they learned how to use the microwave. We gave a collective “Meh” when they mastered darts. But this is something mankind can’t ignore — robots can now dance in unison to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
This development threatens to upstage hardworking Filipino prison inmates and start a wave of robotic ’80s music video reenactments. The worst thing? These robots aren’t just some animatronic dance troupe like the Country Bear Jamboree; no, these machines can actually judge if they are a step or two behind the rest of the dancers and catch up.
The NAO robots, built by Aldebaran Robotics and programmed by MIT’s Patrick Bechon and Jean-Jacques Slotine, utilize a process called quorum sensing to synchronize themselves. In nature, quorum sensing is when bacteria emit molecules into the environment so individuals can keep track of how many organisms are around them and what they’re doing.
Instead of molecules, each of these robots sends out data, which makes it possible to synchronize with the others even when one’s been removed from the group and set on its bottom. According to MIT’s Technology Review, this has implications beyond Michael Jackson dance routines:
That’s interesting because while synchrony allows large numbers of robots to do the same thing at the same time–such as dancing or marching–it also allows large number so robots to do different but related tasks at the same time.
In other words, synchrony is an enabling technology for large scale co-operation. And that opens the way to an entirely new set of tasks that robots could do–think manufacturing and construction. Perhaps even nest building.
Robot construction sites built into robot factories, which will assemble robot man-birds, who will learn to build nests to hatch robo-chicks. The end is nigh, my fellow humans. Enjoy the dance performances while they last.
Administrator’s Note: Doggone it! I wanted to see more, but I guess it ain’t easy even for a robot to do an entire routine of Michael Jackson’s! It would probably blow them out!
This is cute! Much love to my sweet Michael! ♥

Janet Jackson has some hard-earned wisdom to impart on niece Paris Jackson. The sole daughter of late legend Michael Jackson has hopes of becoming an actress, but at least one member of the family does not approve.
“We’ve spoken about the fact that you’re only a child once,” Janet Jackson said during an interview for the latest issue of Prevention magazine. “I think there’s a time for everything, and now is not the time [to act in films]. I told her I thought she should enjoy being a kid, possibly go to college or not, but wait till she turns 18.”
The singer, who acted during her childhood on television shows such as Good Times, Different Strokes and Fame, went on to say of 14-year-old Paris Jackson, “She’s a very tough, smart girl. But it’s a cutthroat industry. I wouldn’t want my child to do it.”
Along with sharing her concerns for late brother Michael Jackson’s children, Janet chatted about her recent weight loss success. “Health was always a concern,” the 46-year-old explained. “When I gained weight in 2005, my nutritionist was very worried. I was close to having diabetes. Even when I lost it [and] then gained quite a bit back, there was always the thought of heart disease.”
Of recognizing and coping with her self esteem issues she shared, “Knowing I have these problems with body image, I ask my friends and family to tell me when I’ve lost too much. Because I will continue to pick on myself like all other woman do, and say, ‘You need to [lose] more here, more there.’”
“I think people really connect with the idea of someone who’s gained and lost weight in a very public way, and also someone who’s an emotional eater.”

In the1970s, teen magazines were my obsession — and inspired my love of design
Before there was a Justin Bieber — before there was even a Justin Timberlake — there was Donny Osmond. One summer night in the 1970s, my poor older brother, Mike, was forced to take his preteen sisters to see Donny and those other Osmonds, as well as the Jackson 5, at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Imagine the stress of worrying about two adolescent girls and their obligatory mutual friend dancing their way down from the cheap seats to the slightly better view one section below. Mike was in college, and my sister and I weren’t even in high school yet. I guess that’s why our brother sat ducked down in his seat, hiding behind a newspaper.
16 was my first magazine subscription, though I never got to send away for any of the groovy posters or luv kits. 16 and Spec were essentially the same publication, but the idea of reading a magazine called 16 made me feel older—you know, more mature.
Gloria Stavers was 16 magazine in the early 1970s. She met its owner, Jacques Chambrun, in 1958 and signed on as office staff for the nascent publication. She checked reader mail and fulfilled subscriptions, all the while studying young readers’ needs. She soon made a name for herself in the entertainment industry with her list of questions compiled from the typical queries the magazine received — “40 Intimate Questions.” By late 1958, Chambrun named Stavers editor in chief of 16. The writer Dave Marsh calls her the “first real pop journalist.”
Stavers published teen idols’ loves ’n’ hates, baby pix, and wonderfully whitewashed life stories. There was no sex to speak of, though there was an implied — and completely benign — sexiness in some of the feature titles (“What I Do After Dark!”). The stories were upbeat, and the stars didn’t have things like drug or alcohol problems. There were lots of exclamation marks and no sordid scandals. And ohhhh, the pinups that were carefully removed from the center of the book and taped to my bedroom walls …
The 16 mag (always mag, never magazine) of my childhood asked squealing preteens to choose between Donny, David, and Michael. Though I did like David Cassidy and his groovy hair, and enjoyed a little Donny from time to time, my heart ultimately belonged to Michael Jackson. He seemed like a shy guy, which was intriguing, and Michael didn’t get quite as much magazine real estate as Donny. I always rooted for the underdog, even back in 1973.
I was past my teen-mag expiration date by the time Andy and David Williams and Shaun Cassidy became fave raves. And I never quite understood the appeal of Randy Mantooth or Rick Springfield, though I always had a huge crush on Scott Jacoby.
1970s-era Spec and 16 inspired my love of publication design. Looking back, of course, they’re both pretty cheesy but also charming and unself-conscious with their rub-down type and Chartpak rules. The colors! The illustrations!
These are my teen mags, by the way, not eBay purchases—though admittedly, I’ve been seriously tempted…

Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking ‘Bad’ album will be re-released to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
The iconic record is to be accompanied by a number of never- before-heard demos recorded by the late singer – who passed away from acute Propofol intoxication in 2009 – when he was making the album.
The album will come in a pack featuring three CDs, two collectible booklets, and the first ever authorised DVD release of a concert from the singer’s record breaking ‘Bad’ tour.
John Branca and John McClain, Co-Executors of the late singer’s estate, said: ”The era of ‘Bad’ represented Michael’s creative ‘coming of age’ as a solo artist in charge of every aspect of his career.
”This was the first album on which nearly all of the songs were written by Michael. It was also the first album in history to produce five consecutive number One singles and it took two and a half decades for another artist to match that success.”
‘Bad’ was originally released on August 31, 1987 and has sold over 45 million copies to date. The DVD included with the new package documents Michael’s legendary July 16, 1988 concert at Wembley Stadium, watched by Britain’s Prince Charles, Princess Diana and 72,000 fans.
The concert was one of a record-breaking seven nights Michael headlined at the venue, attended by more than half a million people.
Branca and McClain added: ”It was the first time Michael would tour as a solo artist – his vision, his decisions on what the show would be. The enormous success of the ‘Bad’ album and tour was a pivotal moment in Michael’s growth as a composer, performer and producer cementing his role as the King of Pop.”
The 25th anniversary edition of ‘Bad’ will be released on September 17.

Mark Zuckerberg might have more money than the average man, but he has the same musical tastes as everyone else — because TMZ has learned his wedding was bumping some serious Michael Jackson tracks all night long.
A neighbor of the Facebook CEO tells TMZ … they could hear the music coming from the wedding the entire time (as evidenced by our video where you can hear Billie Joe Armstrong singing from the street).
The neighbor tells TMZ there was plenty of upbeat music all night — including Flo Rida, Bon Jovi and Janet Jackson. But the overwhelming favorite was the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.
Status update: everyone loves MJ!

In Honor of Robin Gibb
When I heard the news this evening that Robin had passed, I was very sadden that he was gone. He has been through much sickness and pain and bravely fought to live with many complications. His poor body was worn out, I am sure. While I am not happy that he is no longer with us, I am glad that he’s does not have to suffer anymore. I know that we have lost so many of our favorite entertainers this past week, but this scripture of comfort came to my mind immediately.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4: 7-8.
Except for Barry, these beautiful brothers are now gone. They gave us great songs and good times doing the reign of disco. May God keep the Gibb family during this time of their bereavement. Robin, may you rest in eternal peace. Much love, Cutie Pie ♥
I dedicate this beautiful song in honor of Robin.

We celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Michael Jackson BAD album!
This is the third year of the MJFanvention — the event that celebrates the life and talent of the King of Pop, August 24 – 26. It’s more than just a party. Attendees will learn what made Michael Jackson such a phenomenal talent. Was it just merely talent? Or did he carefully craft his performances and study his audience?
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
We will also talk about his creativity and his pioneering role as an African-American artist working in an industry still plagued by segregation with Joe Vogel, author of three books on Michael Jackson, including Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson (Sterling Publishing, 2011). Vogel has been published in the Atlantic, Huffington Post and PopMatters.
Delve into the physical ailments that led him to Dr. Conrad Murray and the fatal dose of anesthesia that led to his death. Cherylin Lee, RN, Ph.D. tearfully testified at the trial of Murray. She was a friend and confident of Jackson and counseled him weeks before his death on his health issues.
Enjoy special guest performances and a presentation of unseen video footage from the Chicago Blues Museum. Then later, join the MJFanvention2012 Dance party at L26 Restaurant at the Chicago South Loop Hotel in Chicago at 7 p.m. on August 25th.

A Los Angeles County deputy district attorney who helped win the conviction of Michael Jackson’s personal physician was appointed a judge Friday.
David Walgren, the lead prosecutor at last year’s trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, was among eight attorneys named to the L.A. County Superior Court bench by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Walgren, a 43-year-old Democrat from Calabasas, worked on several high-profile cases during 16 years at the district attorney’s office. He prosecuted a photographer accused of trying to blackmail actress Cameron Diaz and headed an unsuccessful 2009 attempt to extradite director Roman Polanski from Switzerland for sentencing in a three-decade-old child sex case.
His greatest attention came during Murray’s manslaughter trial, a six-week televised proceeding covered by an international contingent of reporters.
In a closing argument that was widely praised, Walgren humanized Jackson by reminding jurors that the larger-than-life celebrity with a history of drug problems was a father whose three children adored and missed him.
Jackson fans applauded the prosecutor when he walked down the courthouse halls, and his performance sparked Facebook fan pages, including “David Walgren Is Hot.”
Administrator Note: Congratulations to David Walgren! I can’t think of a better appointee to be on the bench. We need more judges like him and Judge Pastor. I feel better with such men of integrity making wise and lawful decisions which will affect many lives. Way to go!

Michael Jackson was defined, in part, during his legendary music career by his unique sense of fashion.
Next week, some San Antonians, many of whom are too young to remember Jackson, will get an up-close look at his trend-setting style.
Jackets worn by the King of Pop in his iconic music videos for hit songs “Thriller” and “Bad” will be on display at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (formerly Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital) on May 21 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Christus officials say the display will be open to the public and is part of a larger tour intended to help raise money for children’s charities.
The jackets are owned by Austin philanthropist Milton Verret, who says he purchased them “with the promise of continuing Michael’s quest for helping children.”
Jackson recorded nearly a half-dozen albums, including “Thriller” and “Bad,” that were among the all-time best sellers in the recording industry. He released 13 No. 1 hit singles.
Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50.
Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil is scheduled to make a stop at San Antonio’s AT&T Center June 23.
The Business Journal reported in April that Christus Santa Rosa planned to transform its downtown hospital campus into a new Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. As part of that conversion, Christus is relocating adult services now at its downtown campus to other facilities.
Once again, I am in deep shock and despair upon hearing that another fabulous entertainer has gone home today. She had been quietly fighting cancer. I remember how much I loved Donna growing up. I used to pretend that I was her. I would sing her songs in the mirror with a hair brush as my microphone. My first Donna Summer album was “Bad Girls.” I love absolutely every song on the album and I listened to it and “Off The Wall” constantly on 8-track. I played them so much, they broke! My grandmother refused to replace them because was sick of me blasting them everyday.
Donna was an absolutely beautiful lady. She aged well as she got older and looked just as good as when she was young. Both she and Michael were long time friends and I know that he was waiting for her when she arrived at her final resting place.
Yesterday, Washington, DC lost its legend the “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown at the age of 75. I am not aware of him having any ties to Michael, but I would like to give my respect to the Brown and Summer families. The Kennedy’s are in mourning and I send condolences to them as well. They always say that it comes in three’s. I say I wish that death would never come, but we all have to make that journey one day. We can only take comfort in knowing that we shall see them all one day, better than when they left us.
I don’t really don’t have much to say because I just feel lost. In 2009, we saw many deaths of famous and non-famous people. I hope that this year is not going to be the same. Too many people are leaving too young and too soon.
RIP to Donna and Chuck
Much Love, Cutie ♥

Mark Ronson says his sleepovers with Michael Jackson were “pretty wild”.
The music producer used to be friends with the late singer – who died in June 2009 aged 50 – when he was younger and would often stay over in the same apartment as the Thriller singer, where they would have a lot of fun joking and playing around.
He said: “I was probably 12. He was super cool. You’re 12 years old and he’s the world’s most famous overgrown kid, who’s running around your friend’s apartment with you. It was pretty wild.”
Mark – son of writer and socialite Ann Dexter-Jones and former band manager Laurence Ronson – admits his childhood was quite star-studded and was once saved from drowning by Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney.
He told live magazine: “That sounded like one of my mum’s crazy stories. But then I did a song with Paul McCartney a few months ago. After a couple of days in the studio, he came in and said, ‘Your mum’s Ann, right? Me and Linda (his late wife) would always run into your parents on the beach in Long Island.’ I told him about my mum’s story that he saved me from drowning one time, and he said he vaguely remembered something like that.
“So maybe he backed up her claim, which means I can’t really tease her about it now.”

COLIN SMITH/Fairfax NZ WIZZ POP: Michael Jackson impersonator Kenny Wizz performs at the Theatre Royal tonight.
The King of Pop will be moonwalking in Nelson tonight, sort of.
Kenny Wizz, reportedly one of the world’s best Michael Jackson impersonators, is performing his show HIStory II at the Theatre Royal tonight. Wizz has been impersonating the Billie Jean singer, who died in 2009, for about 27 years. Beginning as a street performer, Wizz was 20 when the album Thriller was released.
“That was when the break-dancing craze came to America, everyone was getting into it.
“Everyone had hairstyles like what he had on the cover. That was when people said I looked like him.”
Wizz spent seven years performing in Las Vegas, two shows a night, six nights a week.
Although touring could be exhausting, moving from place to place, in some ways it was better than the regular gig, he said.
“It’s better for some things, breaking the monotony of the same people, the same city, the same venue.”
Wizz is also an established makeup artist, and does all his own makeup.
“It took me about five years of studying. I still experiment with aspects of it.
“It’s been interesting, over the years his [ Michael Jackson's] look was changing.”
His Michael Jackson look was created with makeup and effects, and he had never had plastic surgery, he said.
Wizz said he never imagined this would be how he would make a living.
“I never thought to make [music] a career. But once I started getting some serious offers, I started training more. Then it became a challenge for myself, to see how far I could go with it.”
HIStory II, Theatre Royal, tonight, 8pm; $64, students $29.

These very special items are offered for sale for the first time on December 2, 2012 at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery as part of our annual Icons & Idols auction.
The exhibit and auction include the designs created by Michael Jackson’s long time costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, which are also featured in the highly anticipated illustrated book by Michael Bush, Dressing Michael Jackson: Behind the Seams of a Fashion Icon, which will be published by Insight Editions and available October 16, 2012. The collection of Jackson clothing and wardrobe offered for sale, and seen in this book, showcases Michael Jackson’s love of fashion and huge impact on popular culture. Many of the items featured in this book will be included in the auction with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas and Guide Dogs of America in Los Angeles.
Sale highlights include a 30th Anniversary of Madison Square Garden show signed prototype helmet which was wired to illuminate a row of battery powered lights below the visor. The helmet is signed in black marker to designer Michael Bush and states “To Bush Love Michael Jackson,” and Jackson’s “Scream” video costume which includes a pair of black spandex pants with matching long sleeve shirt and mesh tuck strap. Each costume piece is marked on the interior in gold marker “2/2” or “2/2 M.J.J,” indicating that two costumes were created for Jackson’s famous video shoot. Michael Jackson’s Captain EO white spandex shirt featuring ribbed neck, zip closure and a rainbow motif is also included as well as the King of Pop’s Awards Ceremony jacket which is a black wool jacket embellished with red armband, gold tone metal floral buttons, metallic embroidered crown patch at chest and buckled leather straps at right shoulder. Jackson wore this jacket when he attended the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards in 1989 where he was honored with the Sammy Davis, Jr. Heritage Award, the Heritage Award for Career Achievement and awards for his single and video for “Man in the Mirror.”
There is no doubt that Michael Jackson was a global fashion icon as well as award winning and beloved musician. His wardrobe dictated many of the styles throughout the last few decades. Jackson played a very intimate role in the designs and completion of every costume and piece of clothing he wore both on stage and in his personal life. Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush shared a very personal and close 25 year relationship with the artist which is rich in story-telling that runs throughout this collection, as well as detailed in the upcoming book.
A portion of the proceeds of the auction will benefit two charities, Guide Dogs of America (GuideDogsofAmerica.org) and Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas (www.nah.org).

LANCASTER — With 40 years of experience drumming for Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones and others, Ricky Lawson has gained a wealth of knowledge about the music business.
On Friday he shared that knowledge with about 150 Lancaster, Madison-Groveport and Watkins Memorial music students at Lancaster High School before performing with the LHS Percussion Ensemble.
He will do another performance with the ensemble at 8 p.m. today at the high school.
“There’s nothing greater than to see young people achieve their goals and be happy with their lives because of something we’ve done as adults,” Lawson said. “There’s a lot of great kids here. We’ve just got to talk to them and not talk at them.”
Lawson, 57, had no trouble talking to the students as he gave them tips on the music business and talked about working with some of pop music’s greatest performers. For example, he was the drummer on Whitney Houston’s hit, “I Will Always Love You” and said he was allowed to play a drum solo during the song.
“That song didn’t start until I hit the first note,” Lawson said.
Lawson also toured with Jackson on a couple tours.
“Michael was a great guy,” he said. “He loved music and he loved people.”
Lawson also spoke of the money it’s possible to earn as a musician.
“You can make a gazillion dollars,” he said. “You can make a ton of bread. You can go down and buy a sports car with the money you make, and I mean a nice sports car.”
He said some musicians make anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 per week on tour. Lawson said he was on the higher end of that scale.
Along with talking, Lawson performed three songs for the audience, including Sting’s “Fragile” and Jackson’s “Thriller.” He drummed to recorded instrumental versions of the tunes.
Lawson’s seminar lasted about an hour. But he stayed for another hour talking to a handful of students, and he played clips of a Jackson concert video he was in and a Steely Dan video he played on.
Then he pulled out a surprise.
Lawson’s uncle is Grammy-winning music arranger Paul Riser, who arranged Motown hits such as Diana Ross’ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” The Temptations’ “Pappa Was a Rolling Stone” and Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
Lawson called Riser on his iPad, and Riser spoke to the students for about five minutes. Riser urged the students to learn music theory and listen to the classic recordings.
Lawson told the students to not only listen to the classics, but learn the history of the songs, too.
“That’s the problem with downloading music now,” he said. “All you get is the music. You used to buy albums, and the cover would tell who the producer was, who the arranger was and who the musicians were who played on the album. You don’t get any of that now with downloading. It’s sad — there’s a lot of history that’s been lost.”
It takes a lot of hard work to achieve the level of success Lawson has achieved, he said.
He first started playing the drums at age 15 to impress a girl in his hometown of Detroit. He would borrow another uncle’s drum set for four days each week. He would assemble and disassemble the kit and ride on the bus to give it back to his uncle each weekend. But Lawson said that is the kind of persistence is takes to make it in the music world, even it if means leaving home.
“If you’re a lumberjack, go where the trees are,” he said. “If you can’t find it here in Lancaster, then go to Columbus. If it’s not there, go to Cincinnati, or New York or Paris. Just don’t give up your dreams.”
Try to have fun in the process, Lawson said.
“Keep smiling when you’re playing,” he said. “Because when you’re happy, you play better.”

Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine, will appear on Piers Morgan on Monday of next week.
In a preview from the forthcoming special, Katherine levies serious allegations against Conrad Murray and talks about life without Michael. ”You know what? I can’t even describe the way I feel about him. He did a terrible thing. And it might have been others involved,” she tells Piers Morgan regarding Murray. “I don’t know that. But I feel that. The only thing he did — for a person’s life, four years in jail is not enough.”
Speaking of her son, Katherine Jackson claims she’ll never get over his death. “Never. Every morning, all through the day, I think about Michael. If I wake up through the night, my mind is there,” says Jackson. “But — I just miss him. But being a Christian and believing in the resurrection, I feel that I’ll see him again.”
Katherine Jackson appears on Piers Morgan Tonight Monday, May 14 (CNN).
